Images of California and Oregon Shields
Medicine Lake Highland from Petroglyph Point
Shield volcanoes occur in California and Oregon in the Cascades and Modoc Plateau provinces. They are considerably smaller than Hawaiian shields, but some are massive: Calilfornia's Medicine Lake Highland (MLH) has the largest volume of any volcano in the state. It is a complex shield-shaped volcanic edifice that has a considerable amount of andesite and rhyolite in addition to the normally expected basalt. Newberry shield in Oregon is similar. Other shields are smaller and are composed almost exclusively of basalt. Here is a collection of shields from my travels. Photo note: shields are wide and nearly flat with very gentle slopes. They can be tricky to photograph!
