Images of the Erosional Features of Alpine Glaciation
Images of Horns, Aretes and Cirques
Alpine glaciers erode by plucking rocks from the base of slopes in the hollows where they originate. The valleys become cliff-lined bowl shaped valleys called cirques. When two cirques or two glacial valleys merge, a sawtoothed ridge called an arete is formed. If glacial valleys eat away at a mountain peak from three or more directions, a sharp pointed peak will emerge. These are called horns.

Images of Tarns, Hanging Valleys and U-Shaped Valleys
Alpine glaciers modify the shape of river-carved valleys into U-shaped valleys. Tributary glaciers cannot carve as deeply as trunk glaciers, so when the ice recedes, the tributary valley floors enter the main valleys at high elevations, with waterfalls and cascades. These are called hanging valleys. Tarns are glacial lakes that have been gouged out of bedrock.
